New Haven Event description:
In in lieu of our typical alternate book singing, we will explore the Southern Harmony, a four-shape tunebook by William Walker that predates the Sacred Harp and has remained in active use in Kentucky since the nineteenth century. (It also constitutes the skeleton of Walker’s seven-shape Christian Harmony, which we use on most fourth Tuesdays in the form of its most recent revision.) We will sing from a packet of selections that will be compatible with the full facsimile revision of the book (available from the University of Kentucky Press). You can browse a full scan of the 1854 edition here.
